Now my aunt and uncle’s family uses as a cafe/culture center for the local folks. This home has been around for a long time. The architecture of their home/cafe is about 230 years old. My ancester used to be at this place serving their community as their village official. It was the last chance to spend time at my childhood home before it was demolished for a development. I’ve decided to do rubbing of architecture such as kitchen floor, living room wall, hallway floor etc. as a way to remember the space. During this same trip, I also had an art residency opportunity to live and create artworks at a closed elementary school in Shizuoka city, Shizuoka prefecture. The school stood in the secluded mountainside, surrounded by green tea farms. There was much history and artifacts left in the building from the time it was running as a school. Contrasting color left on the carpet caused by sunburn where bookshelves used to be when the space was a library. Ripped edge on the carpet floor in the principle room. Although this was my first time to visit this school, there was a strange sense of familiarity and comfort. It seemed appropriate to do my “home” theme project here. I decided to take the rubbings created at my childhood home, then placed them in a variety of spaces as a way to celebrate existence of “home” in a fragmented manner. intangible experience. I see it as an endlessly transformative idea and entity. A notion that one’s physical structure of home will stay in the same place forever may not be true, but home can exist in many other forms. This series of works represents my investigation of implications surrounding “home”. I use a variety of media from drawing to photography as a means to embody an expression of fragmented memory and a reassurance that each stage of transformation is meaningful and appropriate. A work on paper, Building and Rebuilding II, depicts a transition of ice cube house as it melts, which is broken into three stages and each one is shown in a different media. It starts with a gouache stain from the melted the ice cube house. The middle stage is a graphite drawing, and then leads to a photographic image of a standing house. As time passes, the home changes into something new and significant.
